Using Linux as your main OS.
I have been a Windows user for many years and have never ventured much into many other Operating Systems until the past couple of years. I work in an IT department for a school system and we are a Dell shop running Only Windows. We use Linux for our servers, that is different however because the end user doesn’t really care as long as they get the information that they want.
I started playing around with different Linux distros about two years ago and found to what I think is the best distro yet. That is Ubuntu. Now I know everyone has been bragging on Ubuntu and you may be thinking that I am just following the crowd. Well, I am not. I love this Operating System. You can pretty much install it on any computer and be up and running in less than an hour. Everything that you need to do DVD and CD burning is already installed after installation of the Operating System. They have Open Office for your Microsoft Office needs. It is 100 percent compatible with Microsoft Office and in my opinion is easier to use and much more reliable.
If you want an application then just go into your Add and Remove software utility and search for the software that you want. It is all Open Source so you don’t have to worry about paying for any of it or violating some copywright law. As long as you have an internet connection that is pretty descent then you can get most anyhthing that you want.
If you are into eyecandy then Ubuntu has that as well. Just go into your visual properties and enable the advanced graphics and tweak the ones you like and play around with the settings and prepare for your mind to be blown away. I have not seen effects like this on Windows or a Mac computer. I couldn’t believe that visuals this appealing could be done with Linux. You still need a pretty good video card of at least 128 megs of video ram to run most of the effects, but most computers nowadays have that or more just as a standard home PC.
Im not saying that I am completely done with Windows or anything. I still use Windows mainly just because that is what we use in the schools and most of the issues that I have to fix I have to learn how to fix them on a Windows machine because nothing else is going to matter. A friends once told me that it is a Windows world and probably will be for many many years and I believe him. You go to any resteraunt or store and the main Operating System of the computers in the place of business are running Windows Operating Systems. Some of them are still running Windows 95 or 98. I remember about six years ago when I worked at a Radio Shack store, the main Operating System they had was still WIndows 3.11 on a computer and 98 on the other. The Windows 98 machine was not hard to believe, but the 3.11 was.
So hopefully you will give Ubuntu a try. At least install it on a seperate partition on your hard drive or maybe find an old drive to just put it on to test. You might be surprised to find out that it was well worth it.
